Frankfurter Berg
City part: Nord-Ost | State: 2025
Frankfurter Berg is a comparatively young district assembled from parts of neighbouring northern suburbs. Its built environment is notably varied: a 1930s garden-style workers' settlement, post-war row houses, former American housing and prominent high-rise blocks stand close together. The S-Bahn station and Homburger Landstraße provide the main transport connections. This abrupt mixture of small houses, large apartment buildings and open land is the district's most distinctive characteristic. The immediate contact between urban development and substantial landscape or recreational space is one of the area’s clearest distinguishing qualities. Courtyards, pedestrian links and shared green spaces are therefore important to how the larger housing forms function at neighbourhood level. The lower building density gives gardens, mature trees and private plots a stronger role in the streetscape than in more compact inner-city districts.
