Bergen-Enkheim
City part: Bergen-Enkheim | State: 2025
Bergen-Enkheim forms Frankfurt's eastern edge and combines two former settlements with extensive open land. Bergen retains a hilltop village centre with the Gothic town hall, the White Tower and the Schelmenburg, while Enkheim is more closely connected to modern housing and the regional transport network. The Berger Hang, orchards and fields create a clear transition toward the surrounding countryside. The district is also associated with the Berger Markt and Frankfurt's long-running literature prize and writer-in-residence tradition. Its identity rests on the continued readability of older local structures rather than on a single landmark. Older plot boundaries, street widths and surviving buildings make the area’s history visible in everyday movement, even where later development has altered the wider setting. Green and waterside spaces are not merely decorative: they organise walking routes, views and the transition between built-up sections and the surrounding landscape.
