Wilhelmstadt: Tiefwerder
City part: Spandau | State: 2025
Tiefwerder is a unique wetland area in Spandau, characterized by waterways, traditional fishing structures and limited residential development. The defining local feature of Tiefwerder is the relationship between water, shorelines, access paths and the housing or open space immediately around them. How Tiefwerder is used over the course of the day depends on views, recreational routes and abrupt transitions between built blocks and a more open waterside setting. Tiefwerder lies in the borough of Spandau, about 13 km west of central Berlin. From Tiefwerder toward Börnicker Straße and Freiheit, density, land use and street character shift step by step rather than at a sharp edge. The immediate streets and open spaces give Tiefwerder a recognisable local identity of its own. Together, these elements make the stronger sense of space created by the water within the surrounding district central to the identity of Tiefwerder.
