St. Paul: Theresienwiese

A

City part: Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt | State: 2024

Theresienwiese is a vast open event ground best known for Oktoberfest. For much of the year it feels unusually empty and expansive, but during festivals it becomes one of the most crowded and energetic places in Munich. The Theresienwiese changes between a vast open field and an internationally known festival ground, so the adjoining streets experience pronounced seasonal rhythms. On event days the area’s rhythm changes sharply, with visitor flows, parking demand and public transport becoming much more prominent than in ordinary daily life. Its identity is citywide rather than purely local, because major events draw people from across Munich and beyond while also shaping the routines of nearby residents. Large open surfaces or halls are designed to absorb exceptional visitor numbers, so circulation, entrances and temporary installations are central parts of the spatial experience. The calendar has an unusually strong influence: crowded event periods alternate with quieter phases in which the underlying infrastructure and openness become much more visible.
