Lehel: Praterinsel
City part: Altstadt-Lehel | State: 2024
These Isar islands form a distinctive central river landscape of museums, historic industrial buildings, paths and waterways. Their changing mix of culture, offices and secluded green corners creates an atmosphere that feels both urban and removed from the surrounding streets. The Isar provides a continuous recreational corridor, linking riverbanks, cycling routes, swimming places and wooded slopes across several neighboring quarters. Freight movements, shift changes and service traffic produce a rhythm very different from a residential quarter and show how closely employment infrastructure is woven into Munich’s urban fabric. Water is not only a backdrop here; it directs walking and cycling routes, opens long views and creates informal places for rest, sport and summer recreation. The greenery has a practical everyday role: it shortens the route to recreation, provides shade and play space, and visually separates different groups of buildings.
