Graggenau
City part: Altstadt-Lehel | State: 2024
Graggenau is a historic part of Munich’s old town around the Residenz and Maximilianstraße. Grand architecture, luxury retail, museums and narrow side streets create a ceremonial, highly polished inner-city atmosphere. The interest lies in the continuity of the built fabric: older façades, courtyards and street proportions remain part of ordinary use rather than functioning as isolated monuments. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. Renovated buildings and changing ground-floor uses keep the inherited fabric active; the area reads as a living neighborhood rather than a preserved historical display. Squares, church forecourts and small street junctions provide orientation and concentrate public life, making modest spaces as important as the better-known landmarks. Housing, work, retail and leisure overlap within short distances, creating convenience and street activity but also a more intensive sound and movement environment.
