Am Riesenfeld: Olympiazentrum

B

City part: Milbertshofen-Am Hart | State: 2024

Olympiazentrum and the Olympic Village form one of Munich’s most iconic modernist ensembles, built for the 1972 Games. Terraced housing, pedestrian decks, colorful student buildings and immediate access to the Olympic Park create a unique, highly recognizable urban atmosphere. The nearby Olympic landscape adds major sports venues, event traffic and broad public spaces, creating a scale that differs markedly from ordinary residential streets. Private gardens and mature tree canopies soften the architecture, provide privacy and make seasonal change unusually present in the streetscape. The separation of traffic, housing and green space reveals the planning ideals of the post-war period, but mature vegetation has made the ensemble feel more settled and less schematic over time. On event days the area’s rhythm changes sharply, with visitor flows, parking demand and public transport becoming much more prominent than in ordinary daily life.
