Alte Kaserne: Siedlung Max II
City part: Neuhausen-Nymphenburg | State: 2024
Siedlung Max II is a planned residential ensemble within Alte Kaserne. Repeated building types, internal paths and shared green space create a coherent layout that differs from the surrounding street fabric. The original planning remains visible, but mature trees, individual use and everyday adaptation have softened the scheme and given it a more settled neighbourhood character. The Alte Kaserne area reflects Munich’s conversion of former military land into urban neighborhoods. The conversion of former military land is part of the area’s identity: retained barracks or institutional structures stand beside new housing, schools and public spaces. Housing, offices and local services now overlap with traces of the former use, creating a quarter whose new identity still remains connected to earlier layers of the site. Public spaces, ground-floor uses and the relationship between construction phases are crucial because they determine whether the development becomes a recognizable neighborhood rather than only a collection of new buildings.
