Alt Moosach: Borstei
City part: Moosach | State: 2024
Borstei is one of Munich’s most distinctive historic housing ensembles, built around enclosed courtyards, gardens and carefully coordinated façades. Fountains, sculptures and integrated local services create an almost self-contained urban world with exceptional architectural unity. Bernhard Borst built the estate between 1924 and 1929; its name was selected in a winter 1928/29 competition that attracted about 2,600 entries. The deliberate combination of housing, art and everyday services explains its unusual self-sufficiency. Ground-floor shops, cafés and everyday services keep the streets active and make many routine needs reachable without leaving the immediate area. The hierarchy between access roads, pedestrian routes, shared courtyards and larger green spaces makes the original planning idea easy to understand on foot. Mature trees and adapted everyday uses now soften the repetition of the original building types, adding variety and a stronger sense of lived-in continuity.
