Altstadt/Süd

Altstadt/Süd combines the traditional Severinsviertel with the modern architecture of Rheinauhafen and the lively streets around Chlodwigplatz. Local pubs, small shops, historic housing and the Rhine give the district a strong Veedel identity with both working-class roots and an increasingly polished waterfront. Administratively, Altstadt/Süd belongs to Cologne’s Innenstadt borough. Shops, services and street-level uses concentrate activity in Altstadt/Süd, while nearby side streets often become more residential within a short distance. The history of Altstadt/Süd is visible not only in individual buildings but also in the street pattern and in the way later development fits around the older fabric.
