Wilhelmsburg: Wilhelmsburger Inselpark
City part: Hamburg-Mitte | State: 2025
Wilhelmsburger Inselpark is the main local green reference point in this part of Wilhelmsburg. The open or wooded landscape changes the scale of the surrounding streets and gives nearby housing a stronger connection to nature than the broader district description suggests. Paths, mature vegetation and the contrast between built-up blocks and open space are therefore central to the identity of this micro-area. The International Building Exhibition and garden show left major projects including the Inselpark, new housing, educational facilities and the Energy Bunker, which combines remembrance, renewable energy and a viewing platform. Wilhelmsburg’s special quality is its scale of contrast and transformation: working-class streets, modern architecture, migrant entrepreneurship, nature reserves, port infrastructure and new urban projects coexist on one island, making it less a single neighbourhood than a diverse city within the city.
