Stellingen: Kamerbalken

The subarea known as Kamerbalken gives this part of Stellingen a more precise local identity. It is best understood through the immediate combination of housing, everyday routes, nearby open space and the way local streets connect with the rest of the district. Treating Kamerbalken separately helps expose small-scale differences in urban form and daily life that are easily lost when Stellingen is described only as one large area. The S-Bahn station at Stellingen and the U2 at Hagenbecks Tierpark provide strong connections, while numerous buses serve local routes. Stellingen’s local centres are dispersed rather than concentrated in one historic square. Its special quality is the unusual coexistence of everyday family neighbourhoods with large metropolitan functions: an internationally known animal park, motorway junctions, rail stations, sports and event facilities all sit within a district that still contains quiet garden streets and pockets of older suburban character.
