Hammerbrook: Sonninpark
City part: Hamburg-Mitte | State: 2025
Sonninpark is the main local green reference point in this part of Hammerbrook. The open or wooded landscape changes the scale of the surrounding streets and gives nearby housing a stronger connection to nature than the broader district description suggests. Paths, mature vegetation and the contrast between built-up blocks and open space are therefore central to the identity of this micro-area. Post-war planning turned much of the area into the office-focused City Süd, with broad roads, freestanding commercial buildings and relatively little housing. Hammerbrook S-Bahn station and proximity to the main station make the district highly accessible, while major roads connect directly to the port and eastern city. Empty-feeling streets after office hours still contrast sharply with daytime activity. Hammerbrook’s special interest lies in this unfinished transition between lost residential city, post-war business zone and a more mixed urban neighbourhood emerging around industrial traces and canals.
