Farmsen-Berne: An der Berner Au

The subarea known as An der Berner Au gives this part of Farmsen-Berne a more precise local identity. It is best understood through the immediate combination of housing, everyday routes, nearby open space and the way local streets connect with the rest of the district. Treating An der Berner Au separately helps expose small-scale differences in urban form and daily life that are easily lost when Farmsen-Berne is described only as one large area. Between and around them, the Wandse, Berner Au, allotments and green corridors create continuous walking and cycling routes that soften the suburban fabric. The U1 runs through the district with several stations, giving direct access to Wandsbek and central Hamburg and making the area much better connected than its outer location suggests. Schools, sports grounds, local shopping and community facilities are distributed across several centres rather than concentrated in one urban core.
