Bahrenfeld: Kühnehöfe

The subarea known as Kühnehöfe gives this part of Bahrenfeld a more precise local identity. It is best understood through the immediate combination of housing, everyday routes, nearby open space and the way local streets connect with the rest of the district. Treating Kühnehöfe separately helps expose small-scale differences in urban form and daily life that are easily lost when Bahrenfeld is described only as one large area. Brick apartment streets and quieter family housing sit beside converted factory courtyards, logistics sites and the A7 corridor, which divides parts of the district. Equally important is DESY, whose research campus and the developing Science City Bahrenfeld give the area an international scientific profile unusual for a residential district. Bahrenfeld’s special character comes from these sharp transitions: within short distances it moves between science campus, football crowds, wooded park, working industry and ordinary neighbourhood streets.
