Altenwerder: Dradenauer Deichweg
City part: Harburg | State: 2025
Dradenauer Deichweg gives this part of Altenwerder a more precise local identity than the district-wide description alone can show. The area is read mainly through the street corridor itself: its building edges, everyday movement and the transition into surrounding side streets shape how this micro-neighbourhood feels. Looking at Dradenauer Deichweg separately is therefore useful for understanding the local balance between residential life, traffic, services and quieter nearby blocks. Almost all of the old settlement disappeared; the surviving St. Gertrud church now stands as an isolated memorial among roads, embankments and industrial infrastructure. Since the early 2000s, the highly automated Container Terminal Altenwerder has defined the district, together with cranes, logistics halls, Hansaport bulk-handling facilities, wind turbines and the waste-to-energy plant near the Köhlbrand bridge.
