Tegel: TXL
City part: Reinickendorf | State: 2025
TXL refers to the former Tegel Airport site, now a major urban redevelopment project focused on housing, research and sustainable city concepts. TXL is shaped above all by the visible overlap of former industrial, railway or infrastructural land with new housing, offices and public space. In TXL, the daily character emerges through surviving large-scale structures, successive construction phases and new everyday routes through formerly specialised sites. TXL lies in the borough of Reinickendorf, about 9.2 km northwest of central Berlin. From TXL toward Waldidyll/Flughafensee and Gartenfeld, density, land use and street character shift step by step rather than at a sharp edge. The immediate streets and open spaces give TXL a recognisable local identity of its own. The character of TXL is clearest along everyday routes between homes, public space and nearby destinations. Within Tegel, TXL stands out through the continuity between an older working landscape and new urban life.
