Marzahn: Alt-Marzahn
City part: Marzahn-Hellersdorf | State: 2025
Alt-Marzahn represents the historic village center within Marzahn, contrasting with the surrounding large housing estates. The defining local feature of Alt-Marzahn is the surviving older street pattern, plot structure and building lines that remain legible beneath later development. How Alt-Marzahn is used over the course of the day depends on the overlap of historic fabric with present-day housing, shops and local institutions. Alt-Marzahn lies in the borough of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, about 10 km east of central Berlin. The transitions from Alt-Marzahn toward Marzahner Promenade and Auersbergstraße are gradual, marked by changes in building form, traffic and greenery. Around Alt-Marzahn, even a few minutes on foot can bring noticeable changes in noise, greenery and access to everyday services. Together, these elements make the continuity of the original settlement within modern Berlin central to the identity of Alt-Marzahn.
