Friedrichshain: Niederbarnimstraße

Niederbarnimstraße lies in Friedrichshain and reflects the district’s mix of historic housing, nightlife and urban density. The defining local feature of Niederbarnimstraße is the continuity of residential streets, courtyards, entrances and short routes to everyday services. How Niederbarnimstraße is used over the course of the day depends on the relationship between building scale, street greenery and the small spaces used repeatedly by residents. Niederbarnimstraße lies in the borough of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, about 3.7 km east of central Berlin. Niederbarnimstraße merges gradually into Boxhagener Platz and Forckenbeckplatz; building scale, street activity and open space change before any clear boundary is felt. Around Niederbarnimstraße, even a few minutes on foot can bring noticeable changes in noise, greenery and access to everyday services. Together, these elements make the quality of ordinary daily life rather than a single landmark central to the identity of Niederbarnimstraße.
