Charlottenburg: Spreestadt
City part: Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf | State: 2025
Spreestadt is a modern waterfront development area, combining residential buildings with office spaces along the Spree. The defining local feature of Spreestadt is the visible overlap of former industrial, railway or infrastructural land with new housing, offices and public space. How Spreestadt is used over the course of the day depends on surviving large-scale structures, successive construction phases and new everyday routes through formerly specialised sites. Spreestadt lies in the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, about 5.3 km west of central Berlin. The transitions from Spreestadt toward Huttenkiez and Ernst-Reuter-Platz are gradual, marked by changes in building form, traffic and greenery. The immediate streets and open spaces give Spreestadt a recognisable local identity of its own. Together, these elements make the continuity between an older working landscape and new urban life central to the identity of Spreestadt.
