Alt-Hohenschönhausen: Hauptstraße
City part: Lichtenberg | State: 2025
Hauptstraße is a dense historic urban quarter in the borough of Lichtenberg. The older settlement pattern remains the most distinctive layer of Hauptstraße; the local streetscape is chiefly defined by historic buildings and older street patterns; surviving village structures and a smaller settlement scale; apartment buildings and compact residential blocks; as well as local shops and everyday services. In Hauptstraße, the daily character emerges through the overlap of historic fabric with present-day housing, shops and local institutions. Hauptstraße lies about 8.1 km east of central Berlin. Hauptstraße merges gradually into Malchower Weg and Weiße Taube; building scale, street activity and open space change before any clear boundary is felt. The immediate streets and open spaces give Hauptstraße a recognisable local identity of its own. Within Alt-Hohenschönhausen, Hauptstraße stands out through the continuity of the original settlement within modern Berlin.
